Netsight is a web-based system for reporting on network health and performance of the JANET(UK) managed network. This information will be used to help inform on where network upgrades might be required. Regional Network and End Site operators can also use the system, to provide themselves with visibility of their own connections and regions of the network.
Key information about the overall status of connections can be displayed on the front pages of the application in the form of Traffic Lights. In addition, Schematic Maps of the Network can be drawn to show the amount of traffic going over the connections. Where required, this information can be made available in the public section of the Netsight site.
More detailed network visibility information is also available to authorized users of Netsight. Users can define their own measurements from a variety of methods, including pings and traffic volume measurements. Data captured from these measurements can then be displayed graphically, or downloaded in raw format. Netsight can also perform a variety of aggregation type operations on data, to allow users to show the data in the most convienient format.
Access to the administration of these measurement jobs and other aspects of the system is devolved, to give fine-grained control to operators of their region of the network.
